RSD DTL (Datalogger) — FAQ

In-car data collection

Back to RSD DTL (Datalogger)

Product & features

Do I need a dedicated data logger?

No — your phone is the datalogger. RSD DTL turns the phone already in the car into a full telemetry unit: GPS, motion sensors and (optionally) video. The only extra part is a cheap OBD-II/MaxxECU adapter if you want engine data. No wiring loom, no bolt-in kit.

Which cars and adapters does it work with?

OBD-II through a Bluetooth adapter, and MaxxECU. It also adds the phone's own GPS and motion sensors, aligned to the car — so even a car with no accessible ECU still produces useful telemetry.

How does the live data reach the team?

Over a WebRTC peer-to-peer link straight to the RSD SRV server station, on ordinary 4G/LTE. Telemetry is about ~1 Mbps; with live video it's about ~5 Mbps up.

What happens if I lose signal in the middle of a stage?

Nothing is lost. The full stage is always recorded locally on the phone, and the session auto-uploads to the server the moment signal returns.

Can it stream and record onboard video?

Yes. It records the full-resolution video locally, and can stream live video (from the phone camera or an external car-mounted camera) alongside the telemetry.

How accurate is the GPS, and does the phone matter?

It works on any modern phone (single-frequency GPS), but a dual-frequency GNSS phone (L1 + L5 — e.g. Xiaomi Mi 8/9/10, Pixel 5+, Samsung S20+) is the single biggest accuracy upgrade you can make in the car.

Do I have to calibrate the phone before every stage?

No. AutoCal re-seats the phone's orientation on the move — even after a mount bump — so there's no calibration stop.

Will a parked car fill the recording with noise?

No. Recording is movement-gated (it starts above ~5 km/h with a short hold), so a phone sitting in the service park produces no recording noise.

Customer support

What support do I get, and in what language?

Direct engineering support from iDSLab — help with adapters, mounting and getting a clean feed to the server — through the website contact form or your in-account Messages. The app is English-only (rally teams work in English terminology); local Hungarian support is available.

Something isn't working during a race weekend — how do I get help fast?

Message us from your account or the contact form; pilot and partner teams get a direct engineering line. Bugs found in the field go straight back to the workshop — that's how the app is refined between events.

Payment, terms & refunds

How do I get RSD DTL?

RSD DTL is a licensed product. Create an account, and once your purchase is processed an admin assigns it to you — then you download the install file from your account and install it on the car phone. It pairs with your team's RSD SRV server. For a pilot, contact us via the website.

What if the system doesn't work out for us?

RSD DTL and RSD SRV are both paid licences. If you were misled by the description, or the software doesn't satisfy you for a reason you couldn't reasonably have known before purchase, 70% of the price you paid is refunded — granted after an iDSLab review and discussion, on your provision of the relevant evidence. See our refund policy.
